Questions
What people ask before they book
Can my old windows really be repaired?
Most can. The wood in an old sash is often denser than new wood, and a joint, a sill or a pane can be replaced without replacing the window. When one can't be saved, we'll say so.
Why do you bill by the hour?
Because what a window needs is hidden until it's open. A flat price per window either pads for surprises or leaves you surprised. We estimate hours in writing and bill the hours worked.
What does the estimate list?
Hours by person, materials, anything left out, the rate for each person and when sashes leave the house. The bill follows the same lines.
What happens if the wood is worse than it looked?
We stop and call you before the hours go up, and write down what we found.
Does my house built before 1978 change how you work?
Yes. Paint in homes built before 1978 may contain lead, and federal rules require a firm paid to disturb that paint to be certified and to follow set work practices: containment, wet methods, a HEPA vacuum and a cleaning check. Our firm number is in the footer, and we'll ask the year your house was built before we price the work.
Do you replace windows?
No. We don't sell or install replacement windows. If a sash can't be saved, we'll tell you what a replacement should keep.
Do you keep the old wavy glass?
Where it's sound, yes. A cracked pane is replaced with new glass, and we'll show you which.
Will restored windows keep the cold out?
A sash that closes snugly with weatherstrip is tighter than one painted shut, and a storm window adds a second layer. We don't quote energy savings.
Do you work on storm windows?
Yes. Wood storm sashes are repaired and painted, and labeled so they go back where they came from.
Can you work if my house is in a historic district?
We can write a description of the work for your application. Whether it needs approval, and getting it, is yours to confirm with the local commission.
How long are my windows out?
Shop work takes a few weeks door to door, because putty and paint need days to cure. A temporary panel closes each opening, and we do a few windows at a time.
Do you work on the inside of windows too?
Yes. The interior casings, stops and the sash faces on the room side are part of the same job.
What does the warranty cover?
Our work: the glazing, the repairs and the paint. It doesn't cover new rot elsewhere or a window we weren't asked to touch. Terms, limits and exclusions are in your written warranty.
When do I pay?
Payment terms are on the estimate. Invoices list hours by person and materials.
